The international climate summit (COP) is coming up from 6 to 18 November in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt. This COP is the 27th and is talked about to be “the implementation COP”. This means that this COP will tackle ways to implement what was agreed before to fight climate change.

A very important aspect of the negotiations is the “Loss & Damage” aspect which aims to find ways to finance adaptation in countries that are highly affected by the climate change but didn’t contribute to it in terms of emissions. The money is supposed to be redistributed from countries that profited from polluting.

But it is also an important COP for the local and regional governments: The COP26 last year in Glasgow was a huge step forward in the recognition of “multilevel governance” which takes into account that regions and municipalities already go ahead and contribute their fair share in fighting the climate crisis. This year this shall be further strengthened.

We are happy to invite you to our Q&A on the impact of local and regional governments in the international climate summit COP27 with Marieke Schouten, Member of the COP27 delegation of the European Committee of the Regions.

Marieke is the Greens in the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) coordinator on climate, energy and energy policy as well as an alderwoman in Nieuwegein in the Netherlands. She has been in the delegation to the climate summit last year as well.

She will tell us what happens on the day of cities and regions in the official agenda of COP27 and answer the questions you are bringing to the session. Join us, on 17 November, at 15:00 CET.

The Q&A will be held in English.
